"After a soft reopening on May 31, during which Mayor Daniel Lurie raved about the sugar cookies and owner Yvonne Hines sold out of every single baked good in the shop, Hines was ready to get back to business. Then, while dropping off her daughter at college in June, she received more bad news: Someone had vandalized the bakery's front window."
"At her daughter's encouragement, Hines set up a GoFundMe raising more than $10,000 in two months. "The community support has been overwhelming and awesome," said Hines. She got back on her feet, she said, thanks to the city of San Francisco, her landlord, the Black police group Officers for Justice, and nonprofit organizations."
Yvonne's Southern Sweets, a 19-year-old Bayview bakery at 5128 Third St., reopened this Wednesday after closing in January due to damage from a neighboring building fire. The bakery is known for sugar cookies, 7-Up cake, peach cobbler and butter pecan cookies. After a May 31 soft reopening that sold out, vandals smashed the front window in June, but the shop contained only ingredients, not cash. Contractors quoted $6,000 to repair the window. A GoFundMe raised over $10,000 in two months and support from the city, landlord, Officers for Justice and nonprofits, including SF New Deal, helped facilitate reopening.
