Bob Melvin recalls his time managing Ichiro Suzuki, particularly a moment in May 2003 when Suzuki showed unparalleled commitment by arriving in full uniform even after being granted an off day. Melvin reflects on Suzuki's exceptional preparation, noting he was the lowest maintenance player he had encountered. Suzuki's passion for the game and recognition of his impact on fans solidified his status as a dedicated player. With 4,367 hits across Japan and the U.S., he is being honored as a member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
Ichiro just kind of nodded, and I got it, Melvin said. Not only is he a great baseball player that commits to playing every day and wants to be there for his team every day.
He was the lowest maintenance player I've ever had in my life, Melvin said. All you had to do was tell him what time the game was, and he was as prepared as any player that I've ever had.
