During a recent MLB game, a bizarre incident occurred in the fourth inning when a second baseball unexpectedly entered the field of play as Atlanta's Sean Murphy scored. Mike Yastrzemski caught the line drive and threw home to prevent a run, but amidst the confusion, a ball thrown from the upper deck was spotted. The umpiring crew concluded it didn't affect the play, allowing the run to count. Manager Bob Melvin and players were left bewildered, noting such an occurrence had never been witnessed before.
As Yastrzemski's throw arrived and Olson slid home safe, a second ball entered the playing field, seemingly thrown by a fan from the upper deck.
I don't know where it came from. I don't know what the rule is. I think everybody was a little surprised by it. It didn't affect the play, but it was extremely odd to see another baseball come onto the field.
Hayden Birdsong, the pitcher, expressed confusion, saying he thought it was the ball thrown home until he realized another ball was in play.
Color commentator Mike Krukow remarked on the live broadcast, noting that he had never seen anything like that before, calling it an event by 'some clown'.
