Four directors at the National Institutes of Health who had been placed on administrative leave earlier in the year were fired. The ousted leaders headed the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, and the National Institute of Nursing Research. Tara Schwetz, deputy director for program coordination, planning, and strategic initiatives, was also fired. The leaves and firings coincided with large-scale layoffs at the Department of Health and Human Services in the spring. Several directors say they were targeted for DEI work and political reasons. One former director filed a whistleblower complaint alleging NIH leadership downplayed the value of vaccines.
