Professor Yu Xiong was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences, joining 62 scholars in the autumn cohort and joining a Fellowship of 1,700 social scientists. Fellows represent 39 UK organisations including higher education institutions, think tanks, non-profits, and businesses, with international members from Australia and China. Xiong is Chair Professor of Business Analytics at Surrey Business School, director of the Surrey Academy for Blockchain and Metaverse Applications (SABMA), and leads research on emerging technologies and sustainability. He holds a BSc from Chongqing University, a PhD from Nottingham Trent University, and is a Chartered Engineer. A 2021 Nature Communications study he led revealed Bitcoin mining's large carbon footprint, influenced COP26 policy debates, and contributed to regulatory action in China.
