Rancho Palos Verdes has decided to continue with zoning changes to accommodate a controversial 16-unit housing development, which follows state mandates. The city council voted to uphold its housing element from last April, avoiding legal action against the developer, Ali Vahdani, who has a vested right to build on the project site purchased for $2.2 million. Neighbors have opposed the development due to its impact on the area, leading to a community backlash. However, the city's decision aligns with state laws designed to alleviate housing crises, particularly SB-330 which supports such developments.
"City planners were not prepared for the backlash after they received an application from Ali Vahdani, the seismic engineer-turned-housing developer at the center of the drama."
"Vahdani has continued to assert his vested right to develop the site according to the zoning the city had adopted at the time he submitted his preliminary application."
"State lawmakers enshrined that right into law in 2019 with SB-330, also known as the Housing Crisis Act."
