"Further along the coast in the fishing village of Findochty, Katie Wilson spotted Magnus on April as she was dropping her three-year-old daughter at nursery near the harbour. The kids could not believe it, said Wilson at the time. They were in shock. It's not every day you see a walrus here. Magnus tumbling off a pontoon in Findochty harbour, on the Moray Firth in Scotland."
Magnus, a young male walrus estimated at 2.5 metres, was first hauled from the sea onto Stronsay pier in Orkney on 16 April and named after that event. After swimming about 200 miles south to the Scottish mainland, he was repeatedly seen resting on piers and pontoons along the Moray coast, including Lossiemouth, Macduff, Fraserburgh, Findochty, and Hopeman. His appearances attracted hundreds of spectators, and he was observed itching vigorously and accidentally rolling off a harbour wall. Police asked the public to report sightings and later erected a cordon at Lossiemouth marina to contain admirers. Increased walrus sightings in Scotland raise concerns that climate change may be affecting Arctic sea-ice habitat, pushing walruses south. Magnus was later spotted in Norway, ending his Celtic sojourn.
