"We used the skinner that was already in place leading up to the Harrington then cut hard left towards the Knudston. The snow"
Arrival in Mammoth Lakes, California, occurred on April 28 with fresh powder in the Eastern Sierra. Guidance suggested going high and north to find untracked snow, with Mt. Thompson offering multiple chutes that could provide at least one fresh line. The trip began early with driving, hiking, and parking at 9,700 feet near South Lake. The route followed loose rock and boulders before transitioning to on-and-off snow and then continuous snow climbing up a creek gully. A short rock scramble occurred near Treasure Lakes, after which snow travel continued to the Mt. Gilbert cirque. The classic Gilbert chute was not in, and a cornice prevented committing to another option. Mt. Thompson’s four chutes had merged into one, with Smrz not going and other chutes already skied, leading to Knudston Couloir as the chosen line.
