Lionel Messi began a promotional 'GOAT tour' in India with events planned in Kolkata, Hyderabad, Mumbai and New Delhi. A 70ft statue in Kolkata was assembled and unveiled virtually for security reasons, prompting thousands of fans to travel to Salt Lake Stadium. Supporters paid up to 12,000 rupees for tickets, chanted, bought jerseys and wore "I love Messi" headbands. Messi walked around the pitch but was surrounded by officials and celebrities and was whisked away by security after about 20 minutes. Frustrated fans stormed the pitch, vandalised banners and tents, and hurled chairs and bottles. West Bengal’s chief minister described the events as deeply disturbed and shocked, while some fans said they had paid a month’s salary to attend.
