A United Nations commission of inquiry concluded there are reasonable grounds to say several genocidal acts were carried out by Israel in Gaza since 2023. A UN human rights panel and some political leaders have called for sporting sanctions, including suspension from international football by Fifa and Uefa. UEFA leadership faces increased pressure from member nations and could consider a vote on suspension. Israel rejects the genocide finding and calls the UN report distorted and false. The United States has pledged to oppose any attempt to bar Israel from the 2026 World Cup, which is hosted by the US, Mexico and Canada.
