""In the legacy cloud, too many custom modifications to OpenStack made upgrades difficult. Flava adopts an architecture that stays aligned with upstream OpenStack. We keep custom patches to a minimum, and when functional changes are needed, we proactively contribute them upstream so they can be merged into the main project.""
""By removing upgrade barriers, we enable a regular update cadence and keep both security and the latest features continuously available.""
""LY also aims to avoid over-investing in availability guarantees at the infrastructure layer alone and instead assumes failure is always possible.""
LY Corporation is transitioning from a heavily-customized OpenStack cloud to a more standard version, creating a unified cloud named 'Flava'. This new cloud will support services with around 300 million monthly users. The previous infrastructure included 130,000 VMs across 11,000 hosts and 27,000 servers with over 160,000 VMs. The 'Flava' cloud will consist of 500 hosts and over 9,000 VMs in a single OpenStack cluster. The company aims to minimize custom modifications to facilitate easier upgrades and maintain security and features.
