James Van Der Beek did not attend the Dawson's Creek live reading of the pilot because he was sick with two stomach viruses. He shared the news on Instagram and supplied a younger replacement to play Dawson for the evening. His children attended and joined Miranda and other cast members onstage to sing the show's theme. Joshua Jackson and Katie Holmes held hands during the sing-along. The reunion reading partnered with F Cancer and served to support Van Der Beek, who received a stage 3 colorectal cancer diagnosis in 2024. The event represented the first cast reunion since 2003.
