Netflix's Sandman created a buddy-cop team-up romance because the original plotline was too expensive
Briefly

The Sandman on Netflix remains largely faithful to Neil Gaiman's comics. Showrunner Allan Heinberg altered aspects to enhance protagonist Dream's likability and reduce side plots. In the second half of season 2, Dream, tasked with protecting the Dreaming, seeks a successor. The introduction of the baby Daniel Hall, who embodies part of Dreaming's power, coincides with significant challenges. Daniel's kidnapping forces Dream to resurrect The Corinthian, raising concerns among allies. Heinberg, aiming to save costs, altered storylines in consultation with Gaiman, focusing on minimizing CGI usage.
"As you can imagine, every moment with Matthew is expensive," Heinberg told Polygon in a Zoom interview. "As a fan and a reader, that arc was not my favorite..."
Dream sets about righting past wrongs while also protecting his realm, the Dreaming, from misfortune. A big part of that involves choosing a successor.
