SF Oasis brings back 'Fresh Prince'- and yes, there's a Carlton dance
Briefly

The production at SF Oasis brings back The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, tapping into its nostalgic energy with vibrant performances and a modern twist. Featuring charismatic portrayals by the cast, the show includes lip-syncs, physical comedy, and numerous '90s cultural references. The director emphasized the importance of showcasing Black performers in a nostalgic context. With the show celebrating its 35th anniversary, themes of race and class from the original series are revisited while acknowledging its dated aspects.
The show bursts with energy, from Major Hammy's charismatic Will to Mudd's neurotic Carlton. The lip-syncs, the over-the-top physical comedy, and the perfectly timed '90s references make it feel like stepping into a time machine - if that time machine also had a drag queen at the controls.
It was important to me to not only introduce a new show that was deeply nostalgic for me, but a show that featured Black performers.
The thing about TV shows is they're so 'of a time,' and sometimes the material (or the actors) age poorly.
Every week, we waited for Will, Carlton, Hilary, Uncle Phil, and Aunt Viv (the first one, anyway) to flip the script on what class and hip-hop culture could mean.
