"We knew our season was over and we've done as well as we could expect to do,"
"They really kind of broke down and every shot they made, they started crying and the other team would be consoling them. It was quite emotional. The basketball season ended, but the legacy is still there."
"Each family is doing their own thing. It's amazing to see how they have turned tragedy into a little bit of positive,"
Walkerton District Community School's senior girls reached the Ontario championships, finishing among the top eight teams in the province. The team played its final game while grieving the May 2024 crash that killed 17-year-old Olivia Rourke, classmates Rowan McLeod (17), Kaydance Ford (16), Danika Baker (16), and teacher-coach Matt Eckert (33). Players frequently broke down during the game, with opponents consoling them after made shots. Ontario Provincial Police completed the investigation and announced no charges would be laid. Memorial funds and foundations were created to honor the five. Basketball and school sports became central to the community's healing.
