Cedar, a blind baby moose, was rescued near Ottawa by Holly's Haven Wildlife Rescue after being found wandering alone. He received professional veterinary care, where it was discovered he has partial sight in one eye. Due to capacity issues at Aspen Valley Wildlife Sanctuary, Cedar will be moved to the Toronto Zoo, which has an appropriate enclosure for him. Permission from the provincial Ministry of Natural Resources was obtained quickly, as moose can only be kept in a zoo if they can't survive in the wild.
The two-month-old baby moose, named Cedar, was found by an animal rescue group on a rural road in Hawkesbury, Ont. Cedar was blind and wandering on his own.
Holly's Haven Wildlife Rescue provided Cedar with professional veterinary aid. Assessments found he has partial sight in one eye. An outdoor enclosure was created for him.
Due to the capacity issue at Aspen Valley Wildlife Sanctuary, the Toronto Zoo was contacted as a suitable alternative for Cedar's permanent home.
The Ministry of Natural Resources approved Cedar's transfer to the zoo within a day. Moose can only be placed in zoos if deemed unable to survive in the wild.
