Heads Up: European Hotels Are Pulling This 1 Complimentary Room Essential-What to Know Before Your Next Trip
"The reason for this is multipronged. In an effort to reduce packaging waste, the European Union (EU) announced a plan last year to have single-use plastics-like mini shampoo and conditioner bottles- banned by 2030. Most European hotels have now switched over to bulk-sized dispensers in order to reduce plastic waste, with many only offering shampoo, body wash, or two-in-one shower gels."
"In addition to the travel-sized toiletry ban, hair conditioner also just isn't as popular among Europeans as it is in the U.S. One 2019 survey found that 84 percent of women use hair conditioner in the U.S. On the flip side, just 48 percent of women across Italy and Spain and 29 percent of women in France use the product, per a 2017 Kantar Worldpanel survey."
"Folks have been using social media to give Europe-bound travellers a heads up about the issue, advising them to either pack their own or plan on buying some upon arrival. Back in May, one Facebook user posted a question in the public group What to pack for Italy - Travel Essentials regarding whether or not Italian hotels supplied conditioner for guests. A flood of responses came in, with many conveying a similar message: Don't count on it."
Complimentary hair conditioner has become less common in European hotel rooms, with many properties favoring bulk dispensers or two-in-one products. The European Union announced plans to ban single-use, travel-sized toiletry bottles by 2030, prompting hotels to eliminate mini shampoo and conditioner bottles to reduce plastic waste. Conditioner usage rates are lower in several European countries compared with the U.S., with surveys showing markedly lower percentages of women using conditioner in places like Italy, Spain, and France. Travelers are being advised on social media to pack their own conditioner or buy it upon arrival.
