Swimming in the Seine provides a unique urban experience, attracting over 50,000 swimmers since its initiation on July 5. Participants wear yellow lifebuoys for safety and are monitored for bacterial levels to ensure health. City officials view this limited two-month summer season as a pilot phase, with hopes of expanding the program by 2026. Despite historical concerns over water quality, successful monitoring has led to no reported health issues among swimmers. Nutritionist Ariane Grumbach expressed a desire for a longer swimming season beyond July and August, the warmest months for stability in water quality.
"I've walked and cycled along the Seine many times, but this was a unique opportunity to swim surrounded by beautiful architecture I've always seen from a different angle."
"What I'd love is to swim for more than just these two months," says nutritionist Ariane Grumbach, who has done leisurely laps in the Seine several times.
More than 50,000 swimmers have participated in the experience since the sites' openings on July 5, with no reported health issues.
Daily bacterial monitoring has proven effective in keeping swimmers safe; this week, the three official swimming sites were closed due to heavy rains.
