My Favorite Airbnb in Madrid: A Lofted Apartment with Seven Balconies
"Usually, it's forgetting to bring my driver's license to a tattoo appointment or messing up a movie time. This was bigger than missing film credits. Staying in a beautiful home - Scandinavian design, preferred - is one of our holiday priorities. The realisation came while I was in the shower, fully in the "shampoo-in-the-eyes, can't-see-anything" state of sudsing up. Blinded by hair product, I finished that shower in approximately 30 seconds, rushing to my phone to see if my gut was correct. It was."
"All of the photos in the listing were beautiful, but the features that reeled me in were the seven (!) balconies. Every set of the apartment's glass doors - each with wooden shutters for privacy - opened up to a small outdoor space with just enough room to fit one person peering outside to take in the city view, preferably over coffee in your pyjamas."
I booked an Airbnb for the wrong dates a week before a planned trip to Madrid and Barcelona and realised the error in the shower. I often make similar mistakes but found replacement options only slightly above the original rate. I secured a two-bedroom apartment on Calle del Pez in Malasaña, near Tribunal metro and about 20 minutes from the airport. The apartment had seven balconies and many glass doors with wooden shutters, offering natural light and small outdoor views ideal for coffee in pyjamas. My partner, a photographer, loved the light. We were greeted by our host, Mylene, who walked us through the house rules.
