Font Faces: Nick Shinn - I Love Typography Ltd
Briefly

"The ethos of that hippy bible, the Whole Earth Catalogue, was D-I-Y (Do It Yourself), and its mantra was "access to tools." It was put together in a somewhat unprofessional manner, using, for instance, IBM Selectric typesetting. My first foray into activism was in a housing action group, and I too was unprofessional, for I had not been"
Nick Shinn was born in London in 1952 and studied fine art, gaining a Dip.AD in 1974. He lived in Toronto from 1976 to 2009, then moved to Orangeville. In the 1980s he worked as an art and creative director in advertising and co-founded an environmental marketing company. He went digital in 1989 and started Shinn Design, focusing on publication and marketing design. Between 1980 and 1998 he designed seven type families for multiple foundries, including Fontesque for FontFont. In 1998 he shifted to full-time font work by launching Shinntype to publish and market his fonts worldwide. His interest in type design grew from a DIY ethos and broad skills rather than specialization.
