British Museum is promising 'Good Vibrations' for the Bayeux Tapestry's trip to the London
"When the Bayeux Tapestry makes its historic visit to the UK next year, it will need to travel in a container that is exceptionally resistant to vibrations. That's one of the conditions applied to the transfer, which the government has just revealed, ensuring that the precious tapestry does not experience more than 2 millimetres of vibration per second on its trip to London."
"That journey will mark the first time the tapestry has been in the UK since it was made, probably by Canterbury embroiderers, and was soon afterwards sent to Bayeux Cathedral in France. It has remained in France ever since. After it arrives in London and is installed under the supervision of French advisors, the exhibition will open to the public in September 2026 and run until July 2027."
The Bayeux Tapestry will travel to London in summer 2026 for display at the British Museum from September 2026 to July 2027. The transfer requires a container limiting vibration to no more than 2 millimetres per second, prompting engineers to design a specially vibration-resistant crate loadable onto a train. The British Government will provide nail-to-nail indemnity based on a French valuation, effectively assigning a price to the tapestry. The British Museum will fund all conservation work for the move. A dry run with a replica will precede the shipment. Some exhibition tickets are reserved for French residents in London.
