Remains of Malgorzata Wnuczek, a Polish national living in Leicester who disappeared on 31 May 2006 aged 27, were discovered in scrubland off the Great Central Way near Watkin Road and have been sent for forensic testing. Ms Wnuczek vanished after splitting from her husband and father of her six-year-old daughter and was last seen catching a bus from her workplace into the city centre. The last family contact was a text two days before her disappearance. In June 2023, searches of the River Soar were conducted following information from Polish police. A 39-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender and perverting the course of justice but was released with no further action. A file is being prepared for the coroner and the investigation remains open and ongoing with liaison between Leicestershire and Polish authorities; police expressed condolences to the family.
