Jay Slater, a 19-year-old from Oswaldtwistle, fell 25 metres down a ravine while trying to walk home from a night out in Tenerife. He attended the NRG music festival at the Papagayo nightclub and later went with friends to an Airbnb in Masca, a remote village in the mountains. After consuming drugs and alcohol, he attempted a 14-hour hike back to his accommodation but became disoriented. Despite multiple phone contacts with friends before his phone died, he failed to communicate his exact location in the mountains.
