"Siblings facing eviction from their childhood home in East London after their mum's sudden death from cancer have asked the council for fairness and compassion. Hackney Council has told Joanne Thompson 44, and her brother Calvin Gray, 55, they will have to leave their home of over four decades because their late mum Megan's tenancy was technically transferred to her from their father over 30 years ago, meaning it can't be passed on to them."
"Under succession rules in England and Wales, a council home can only be passed on once. Joanne thought she was getting on the front foot by requesting a tenancy succession for their flat on Hackney's Linzell Estate, but she was soon told the family did not qualify because of her father's transferring the tenancy in 1992. The family were served a notice to quit (NTQ) ending their late mum's tenancy by 21st December and giving them until 18 January to leave."
"The council is now set to end Megan's tenancy by December 21, which would give the unauthorised occupants Calvin, Joanne, her husband Dale Thompson and their five-year old daughter Ciara 28 days from then to leave the property. It's so close to Christmas, Calvin told the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS). They haven't actually shown us proof of the earlier succession, his sister added. I just want clarity."
Joanne Thompson, 44, and her brother Calvin Gray, 55, face eviction from their childhood Hackney council flat after their mother Megan's tenancy cannot be inherited because it had been transferred from their father over 30 years ago. Megan died in July after a short aggressive illness and her burial was delayed by two months. Joanne was recently made redundant amid the family's grief. Hackney Council served a notice to quit ending Megan's tenancy by 21 December and gave unauthorised occupants until 18 January to leave. The family say the flat has been their emotional and community anchor since 1978, have requested succession and proof of the earlier transfer, and await any discretionary succession offer or rehousing while expressing frustration at vague housing communications.
