Small boat crossings resume after longest pause Channel arrivals for seven years
"From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging. At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground."
"The UK has recorded the longest period without migrants arriving on small boats crossing the Channel for seven years, official figures show. Before this weekend, no-one had completed the perilous crossing for 28 days, since 14 November, according to the latest Home Office data. No migrants were recorded arriving in the country up to and including 12 December marking the longest uninterrupted run since autumn 2018. A number of small boats were seen in the Channel on Saturday, breaking the long pause."
"December is traditionally one of the quietest months for Channel crossings, with a combination of low temperatures, poor visibility, less daylight and stormy weather making the journey particularly difficult. The most arrivals ever recorded in the month of December is 3,254, in 2024. Arrivals at a Border Force compound in Dover on Saturday (Gareth Fuller/PA Wire) This year looks likely to see the second highest annual number of migrants arriving in small boats since data was first reported in 2018. The all-time high is 45,774 arrivals"
The Independent covers a wide range of topics, including reproductive rights, climate change and Big Tech, and investigates financial and political issues such as Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC. The Independent produces documentaries like 'The A Word' about American women fighting for reproductive rights and requests donations to continue sending journalists to report from the ground and present multiple perspectives. The outlet provides free access without paywalls and relies on supporters who can afford to fund quality journalism. UK Home Office figures show no recorded small-boat migrant arrivals up to and including 12 December, the longest uninterrupted run since autumn 2018, though a number of boats were later sighted.
