Prime Minister Dick Schoof announced that the Netherlands will hold a new election following the collapse of his coalition government. The crisis was triggered by far-right leader Geert Wilders withdrawing his party's ministers due to disputes over immigration policy. Schoof will serve in a caretaker role while formalizing the resignations. Wilders expressed frustration with his coalition partners over the perceived slow pace of immigration reform, leading to a strain in the coalition. The potential governmental instability comes ahead of a NATO summit in the Netherlands, which raises concerns over increased NATO spending being on hold.
"No signature for our asylum plans. No adjustment of the coalition agreement. The PVV is leaving the coalition," said Wilders on X, formerly Twitter.
The endeavor was shaky from the start, however, with politicians voicing aversion to working with firebrand Wilders and doubts about his willingness to abide by the country's constitution.
