Government confirms next wave of rail nationalisations: GTR, West Midlands Trains and Greater Anglia
"The government has confirmed which of the private train operators will be nationalised as part of the government's plans to nationalise England's railways. Already announced was Greater Anglia, which will be nationalised on 12th October 2025. That will now be followed by West Midlands Trains (which includes West Midlands Railway and London Northwestern Railway) on 1st February 2026. However, the big one will be on 31st May 2026 when the UK's largest train operator, Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) is nationalised."
"This means that by the middle of next year, 8 in 10 passenger rail journeys for which the Department for Transport ( DfT) is responsible will be nationalised services. Chiltern Railways and Great Western Railways services are then expected to follow, with the Secretary of State for Transport due to make final decisions on when exactly this will happen in due course."
Greater Anglia will be nationalised on 12 October 2025, followed by West Midlands Trains on 1 February 2026 and Govia Thameslink Railway on 31 May 2026. By mid-2026, eight in ten passenger journeys for which the Department for Transport is responsible will be run by nationalised services. Chiltern Railways and Great Western Railways are expected to follow, with timing to be decided by the Secretary of State for Transport. All passenger services under DfT contracts are planned to return to public ownership by the end of 2027 and to be integrated into Great British Railways. Transfers occur after contract minimum terms to avoid extra taxpayer costs.
