"in-depth assessment of the current financial rules and safeguards and offer recommendations to further mitigate risks from foreign political interference"
The government has ordered an independent review into foreign financial interference in UK politics following the jailing of former Reform UK Wales leader Nathan Gill for taking bribes linked to pro‑Russian interviews and speeches. Communities Secretary Steve Reed said the government must learn lessons so this can never happen again and described the conduct as a stain on democracy. The review will be led by former senior civil servant Philip Rycroft and is due to report in March. The review will assess current financial rules and safeguards and propose recommendations to mitigate risks of foreign political interference.
