"I want to thank the people of Whitburn and Blackburn for putting their trust in me and in Reform. This is a clear signal from local residents that they want their community to take a new, positive direction. This is a vote of faith in Reform in Scotland. We have all the momentum in Scottish politics."
"You sent me a message five weeks ago: 'let's hold the line'. What happened?"
"sheer unfairness and intolerance"
Reform UK won its first Scottish by-election as David McLennan was elected councillor for Whitburn and Blackburn in West Lothian, taking the seat from Scottish Labour. McLennan received 1,177 votes, a margin of 149 over the SNP candidate, and was declared at stage eight of the count on a turnout of 22.2%. The party has gained councillor defections and attracted high-profile figures including Scottish Conservative MSP Graham Simpson and former Scottish Conservative treasurer Lord Offord. Opinion polls indicate rising support for Reform in Scotland, with some suggesting a challenge for second place behind the SNP at Holyrood. McLennan cited "sheer unfairness and intolerance" towards landlords from the SNP and Scottish Greens as a reason for entering politics, and tensions with the Scottish Conservatives were visible after a heated exchange between Russell Findlay and Lord Offord on BBC Question Time.
