"The Americans decided that the red we use, which is called R01, wasn't right for them, and that they wanted a cherry red instead, so we had to buy all new flags for this visit."
"One part of their flag is red. And the one we had in storage was closer to a russet colour, and let's just say they were unhappy. That's the problem with flags that are not commonly flown: it is our interpretation versus their interpretation."
"Their red is now stronger than the red on the union flag, Farley said."
Dozens of US flags intended for a second state visit by Donald Trump to the UK were replaced after the US embassy objected to the shade of red. The Flag Consultancy, the government supplier for ceremonial events, said 66 hand-sewn flags earmarked for the Mall and Windsor Castle were swapped for new ones, and that the change cost an estimated £52,800. The supplier said the embassy wanted a cherry red rather than the stored R01 red, which may have faded to a russet tone from previous use. The replacement resulted in US flags displaying a brighter red than nearby Union Jacks. The US embassy did not comment. The invitation for the visit arrived in a handwritten letter presented by Keir Starmer during his first meeting with the president.
