Water Minister Emma Hardy has warned the UK could face water rationing by the 2030s if new reservoirs are not constructed. The government recognizes the national significance of this issue and plans to take the necessary steps to expedite the building process, originally hindered by bureaucratic red tape. Hardy highlighted that the new reservoirs are crucial not only for water supply but also for enabling the construction of new homes. Additionally, a record investment of £104 billion has been allocated to the water sector to reduce leaks and ensure sufficient drinking water availability for all.
The government has announced they will have new reservoirs built as it is "nationally significant," the Environment Secretary Steve Reed said.
We have a problem in our country where we're not going to have all of the drinking water that we need by the mid-2030s because we simply haven't built the reservoirs required, Hardy told GB News.

The new reservoirs could "unlock tens of thousands of new homes and we can make sure that everybody has the drinking water that they desperately need".
