Ryan Routh was convicted of attempting to assassinate President Donald Trump on a Florida golf course in 2024. A federal jury found him guilty on all counts. He attempted to stab himself in the Fort Pierce courtroom after the guilty verdict. U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon sentenced him to life without parole plus seven years on a gun charge, with other sentences to run concurrently. Prosecutors called the crime unacceptable and a threat to democracy. Defense counsel argued Routh did not pull the trigger and described him as a complex person with a good core. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi thanked prosecutors for ensuring he will never walk free again.
