"Awilda Lopez was battling a crack cocaine addiction when baby Elisa was born on February 11, 1989, at Woodhull Hospital in New York. Due to her drug addiction, Lopez had already lost custody of her two older children. This led to baby Elisa being initially placed in the full custody of her father, Gustavo Izquierdo. He was reportedly a loving father to the little girl, celebrating her birthdays with affection and lavish feasts."
Elisa Izquierdo was born on February 11, 1989, at Woodhull Hospital in New York to Awilda Lopez, who was battling a crack cocaine addiction. Lopez had already lost custody of two older children because of her drug use, and Elisa was initially placed in the full custody of her father, Gustavo Izquierdo, who celebrated her birthdays and cherished her as his 'princess.' A series of events returned Elisa to her mother's care, after which Lopez subjected the child to prolonged physical, emotional, and sexual abuse throughout 1994 and 1995. In November 1995, Elisa died from a brain hemorrhage inflicted by her mother, a case labeled the worst child-abuse incident authorities had witnessed. Child welfare reportedly missed multiple obvious opportunities to intervene.
