Somali flag flown outside Vermont school building over Trump 'garbage' slur brings threats
""We invited our students and community to come together for a little moment of normalcy in a sea of racist rhetoric nationally.""
""We felt really good about it until the ugliness came knocking Monday morning.""
""Our staff members, our administrators and our community are overwhelmed right now, and they are being viciously attacked. The content of those attacks is extremely, extremely deplorable. I don't know what other word to use,""
The Winooski School District displayed a Somali flag on Dec. 5 to show solidarity with a student body that is about 9% Somali. The flag flew alongside the Vermont state flag and beneath the United States flag at a facility housing K-12 classrooms and administrative offices. Somali students cheered and said the flag flying meant a great deal to them. The display prompted a deluge of racist and threatening phone calls, voicemails and social media posts aimed at district workers and students. School phone lines and the district website were temporarily shut down to shield staff from harassment. Videos that omitted the continued presence of the U.S. and Vermont flags spread on right-wing social apps, leaving staff and administrators overwhelmed by vicious, deplorable attacks.
