Southwest Airlines Flight 1496 experienced a rapid descent of nearly 500 feet shortly after takeoff from Hollywood Burbank Airport to avoid a nearby aircraft. The descent occurred six minutes into the flight after pilots were alerted by the FAA of another aircraft's presence. Despite the incident, all passengers reportedly sustained no injuries, although a flight attendant required minor medical treatment. Eyewitness accounts described a chaotic scene during the dive, but the flight eventually reached Las Vegas without further issues.
Southwest Airlines Flight 1496 responded to an onboard alert that another aircraft was in the vicinity while in Los Angeles Air Route Traffic Control Center airspace.
The flight dropped from 14,100 feet to 13,600 feet to comply with traffic alerts issued to the pilots.
Comedian Jimmy Dore described the aggressive midair dive the plane took, stating, "Pilot said his collision warning went off & he needed to avoid plane coming at us."
Southwest noted that no customers reported injuries, although one flight attendant was treated for minor injuries and another was taken to a hospital.
