The recent pause on tariffs between the U.S. and China has led to an indirect criticism from Chinese leader Xi Jinping regarding the trade war instigated by President Trump. Xi emphasized that there are no winners in trade wars and indicated that aggressive actions lead to isolation. Despite this, China views the sharp reduction in tariffs as a victory, as it defied expectations and forced concessions from the U.S. Analysts note that China's minimal concessions, combined with Trump's retreat, mark a favorable outcome for Beijing.
"Bullying and tyranny will only lead to self-isolation," Xi said while addressing Latin American leaders visiting Beijing, making a not-so-veiled reference to the U.S. president's tariffs on about 90 countries.
"This is called, 'victory,' Hu Xijin, the former editor of the state-run Global Times, posted on Weibo after a joint statement from the U.S. and China was released Monday."
"They've really given nothing and have had Trump back down, and it didn't take weeks of excruciating negotiations. It seems to have taken one weekend," said Richard McGregor, senior fellow for East Asia at the Sydney-based Lowy Institute.
