"egregious proposal"
A San Diego city councilmember and the president of the San Diego Housing Federation accused Airbnb of paying protesters to attend a Rules Committee meeting and oppose regulation of short-term rentals. The City Council held a public hearing on Jan. 28 on a ballot measure that would tax empty second homes and vacation rentals. Councilmember Sean Elo-Rivera proposed an annual $8,000 tax on short-term rentals, covering 4,996 second homes and 5,648 vacation rentals. The Rules Committee voted 3-2 against placing the measure on the ballot. Airbnb called the proposal "egregious" and did not directly address payment allegations. An attendee reported overhearing someone say they had been paid $80 to attend.
