President Trump's executive order aims to address unsheltered homelessness by permitting cities to remove unhoused individuals from the streets and place them into treatment centers. This action expands on a recent Supreme Court decision allowing encampment clearing without providing alternative housing. Critics highlight that local jurisdictions lack resources for effective implementation and that severe cuts to Medicaid exacerbate the situation. Homelessness rates are rising, and experts express concerns that a universal approach may overlook differing local challenges, while others see some pragmatic elements in the order.
The Grants Pass Supreme Court decision said that you can clear encampments, even if you have nowhere for folks to go. This is going a step further and saying you can put people into institutions against their will.
The federal government is completely ignoring its responsibilities and defunding the solutions we do have with these healthcare cuts. They're savage.
A one-size-fits-all approach will not work, as places like San Francisco have different issues than other cities around the country.
We've got to get people off the streets faster. We should be careful though not to paint with too broad of a brushstroke.
