Business braces for furloughs, lost data, and policy paralysis as government shutdown looms | Fortune
"The president wants to keep the government open, he wants to keep the government funded."
"giving Democrats one last chance to be reasonable today."
"If it has to shut down, it'll have to shut down."
"But they're the ones that are shutting down government."
Congressional leaders from both parties met at the White House with President Donald Trump in a last effort to avoid a government shutdown. Funding legislation must be passed and signed by Tuesday night to prevent temporary closure of many government offices and furloughs of nonexempt federal employees, which would strain workers and the economy. White House aides indicated the Republican administration did not intend to negotiate, and press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the president wants to keep the government open while giving Democrats one last chance to be reasonable. Republicans pressed for funding that largely maintains current levels, while Democrats demanded Congress take up legislation to extend health care benefits. Trump said he expected a shutdown if necessary.
