President Trump's recent executive order targeting 'sanctuary cities' threatens California's commitment to protecting undocumented immigrants. This order, combined with other recent administration actions, suggests a summer marked by dissent and increased federal control. Notably, the shift of military authority to the southern border raises concerns about the state's rights and the federal balance of power. Political science experts, such as Ross Burkhart, express worries about the implications of an increasingly centralized government, a departure from traditional Republican values that championed states' rights.
"We're still a federal state, and that means that there are powers that are given to the federal government in D.C. and powers that are given to states and localities," Ross Burkhart told me.
Trump turned over from the Interior Department to the Department of Defense a swath of land at the southern border that crosses three states - California, Arizona and New Mexico.
