Rep. LaMonica McIver has made headlines by breaking fundraising records for her re-election campaign amid controversy concerning her actions during a visit to an ICE facility. A group of New Jersey Democrats, including McIver, protested the treatment of immigrants, resulting in Mayor Ras Baraka's arrest. Following the incident, charges of assault and interference with law enforcement were levied against McIver. She has denied the allegations, framing them as politically motivated attempts to undermine legislative oversight.
McIver stated, "Earlier this month, I joined my colleagues to inspect the treatment of ICE detainees at Delaney Hall in my district. We were fulfilling our lawful oversight responsibilities, as members of Congress have done many times before, and our visit should have been peaceful and short."
McIver described the charges against her as purely political, emphasizing that they mischaracterize and distort her actions, aiming to criminalize and deter legislative oversight.
