An investigation into alleged election fraud is underway in a Republican city council primary in New York City. A businessman, George Sarantopoulos, leads the primary by 16 votes, following a recount and the discovery of 22 paper ballots not scanned on election night, which primarily favored his opponent, Richie Barsamian. Reports also indicated absentee ballots were cast by deceased voters, raising concerns about ballot integrity. Legal representatives claim fraudulent actions may point to wider electoral manipulations possibly linked to the local Republican Party.
"This is a classic case of ballot stuffing, where one or more bad actors attempted to mix in 22 fake ballots with legitimate votes," said Aaron Foldenauer, an attorney representing Sarantopoulos.
"Dirty deeds like this only serve to erode trust in democratic institutions and the electoral process. Voter fraud is a serious crime and there is every reason to believe this crime was orchestrated by the Kings County Republican Party to benefit their boss who was on the ballot," said Justin Brannan.
