Agencies ordered to slash workforces are rehiring hundreds of workers to maintain operations and implement policy priorities. Canceling contracts and terminating leases did not reverse rising federal spending; Treasury data show expenditures increased by hundreds of billions of dollars year over year. The largest spending increases are for debt service, national defense, Social Security, and Medicare. The DOGE savings tracker contains factual errors, overstatements, and unverifiable claims. A government shutdown has complicated implementation, and the White House has proposed using the impasse to enact wider job cuts.
