House Republicans are divided over extending Affordable Care Act (ACA) premium subsidies, with Speaker Mike Johnson refusing to allow a vote and moderates seeking offsets. Three discharge petitions aim to force a vote: two already have substantial Republican signatures (one led by Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick, another by Rep. Jenn Kiggans and Rep. Josh Gottheimer), while a Jeffries-led petition needs only four GOP signers to force a vote. Some Republicans (Rep. Mike Lawler, Rep. Kevin Kiley) have not ruled out signing Jeffries' petition though the measure likely would fail in the Senate. Democrats hope defections will occur; skeptics call those threats performative.
