Howard Lutnick says bananas - a tropical fruit - should be grown in the US
Briefly

During a House hearing, Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and Congresswoman Madeleine Dean debated the practicalities of growing bananas in the U.S. Dean emphasized that President Trump's tariffs would raise local grocery bills significantly, notably increasing banana prices by 8%. While Lutnick claimed that U.S. production could avoid tariffs, Dean countered that large-scale banana farming is unviable in most areas. Bananas can be grown in some regions like Hawaii and Florida, but not broadly across the country, reflecting the complexity of agricultural tariffs and climate suitability.
"There's no uncertainty if you build in America and you produce your product in America, there will be no tariff," Howard Lutnick told Rep. Madeleine Dean of Philadelphia during a House hearing on Thursday morning.
"We can't produce bananas in America," the Democratic congresswoman responded. "The concept of building in America and paying no tariff is very, very clear," Lutnick said.
