Oregon strives to tell full story of America's 250th anniversary * Oregon ArtsWatch
""Our mission is to give Oregonians the opportunity to reflect on the history of their country and state, and to talk about what kind of future they want," said Kerry Tymchuk, chair of the 15-member America 250 Oregon Commission that was created by the 2024 Oregon Legislature."
""That is so short-sighted. America has done more things right than wrong. We should acknowledge and learn from our mistakes, so they don't happen again," said Tymchuk, who is also the executive director of the Oregon Historical Society."
""America's birthday party""
Oregon will officially mark its role in American history during the nation's 250th anniversary in 2026. A 15-member America 250 Oregon Commission, created by the 2024 Oregon Legislature, will organize and support events that portray Oregon's place in the country's legacy and will collaborate with regional and local historical and heritage organizations. The national U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission was created by Congress in 2016. The commemoration is occurring amid rising political division and controversy over patriotic celebrations versus acknowledgment of injustices such as Native American displacement, slavery, and Japanese American internment. The state commission commits to inclusive, balanced observances.
