Protesters rally at Freedom Tower against proposed Trump presidential library
"A library does not belong in a place and space that is taking away from Miami Dade College's students."
"My concern is that this land is being taken away from our children and the future and being given away to politicians. No president, including Obama, should get this land, much less for free,"
"This building means a lot to Miami, not just Cuban Americans. It means freedom for all of us,"
About 20 demonstrators gathered outside the Freedom Tower in Downtown Miami to oppose plans to build a Trump Presidential Library on a 2.6-acre parking lot formerly controlled by Miami Dade College. The college board voted unanimously to transfer the lot to the state, clearing the way for the proposal supported by state leaders. Protesters argued the property should be preserved for students and the community and said the land belongs to students. The protest was organized by Dr. Marvin Dunn, a retired FIU historian, who warned the land is being given to politicians and estimated its value at least $60 million. Protesters emphasized the Freedom Tower's symbolic importance as a processing center for Cuban refugees and urged protection of the site.
