Senator Maria Cantwell has requested that Google-owned Mandiant share security assessments regarding AT&T and Verizon related to the Salt Typhoon cyberattacks. She expressed concerns over the telecoms' claims of network security following a significant breach. Previous statements from both companies indicated their networks were secure, but U.S. government warnings suggested otherwise. Cantwell's request includes specific reports and analyses conducted by Mandiant and any unresolved security recommendations, urging for transparency to confirm the operators' claims of network safety.
In December 2024, AT&T and Verizon both claimed that their networks were secure, but weeks before, the U.S. government warned the breach was so significant it made it 'impossible' for agencies 'to predict a time frame on when we'll have a full eviction.'
This response only heightens my concerns about AT&T's and Verizon's current security posture, as they are either unwilling or unable to provide specific documentation that would corroborate their claims that their networks are secure.
To get a better idea of whether the telecoms firms' claims are true, Cantwell last month sent a letter to both AT&T and Verizon requesting information about steps they took to secure their networks.
Cantwell has asked Mandiant to provide documents by August 6, specifically including all reports and analyses conducted in response to the Salt Typhoon attacks.
