Tariff revenue is nowhere close to enough
"The administration continues to add expenses for the country and insist tariff revenues will cover the cost."
"The Cato Institute has been keeping track, and the Washington Post has a unit chart that shows how the claims sum to impossible."
"Each square represents one billion dollars of estimated tariff revenue. Squares are filled with each expense and total cost quickly escapes the bounds of available funds."
The administration continues to add expenses while asserting tariff revenues will cover the costs. The Cato Institute has been tracking those estimates and the Washington Post created a unit-chart visualization that maps claimed tariff revenue against added expenses. Each square in the visualization represents one billion dollars of estimated tariff revenue. Squares are filled with individual expenses to show how much of the revenue each consumes, and the total of filled squares quickly exceeds the available squares representing projected tariff funds. The discrete, countable unit design makes the shortfall visually obvious and underscores the implausibility of the coverage claim.
