"Trump referenced a weekend conversation with Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek, and he alluded to being told by Kotek that the reality in Portland is different from what's being portrayed to him. 'I spoke to the governor, she was very nice,' Trump said. 'But I said, Well wait a minute, am I watching things on television that are different from what's happening? My people tell me different.'"
"They are literally attacking and there are fires all over the place. . . . It looks like terrible. And then he ordered the National Guard in anyway because of course he did. But that's not the point. The president of the United States admitted that he made a dangerous and unpopular decision based on old B-roll from 2020, and on what the murder of crows he's gathered around him squawk and caw in his ear."
A Sunday interview revealed that the president acknowledged receiving conflicting accounts about conditions in Portland after speaking with Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek. The president said he saw television images and also heard differing reports from his aides, then ordered the National Guard into Portland. Critics argued the decision was based on outdated footage and partisan counsel rather than current on-the-ground reality. Commentary compared the action to historical presidential detachment and criticized the administration's information sources. Separately, the QAnon-affiliated January 6 participant Jacob Chansley filed a complaint claiming conspiratorial violations and asserting an unusual legal posture.
